GETTING TO DENALI

Fortunately, there are several convenient transportation options to help you reach Denali National Park. Whether you prefer traveling by train, motorcoach, or rental car, you’ll find choices to suit a range of schedules and budgets. Keep in mind that the park is accessed through a single road entrance at mile 237 on Highway 3. Although there are no direct flights into Denali, the closest major airports are Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport- 242 miles away- and Fairbanks International Airport, which is just 119 miles from the park.

TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS

One of the transportation options we highly recommend for traveling from either airport to Denali is the Alaska Railroad. Operating daily throughout the summer season, the train offers a scenic and comfortable journey that connects travelers directly to the park entrance. Find more information about the Alaska Railroad here.

Alternatively, daily motorcoach services run from mid-May through mid-September, providing another convenient option for reaching Denali National Park. These comfortable coaches offer a relaxing ride and often include informative commentary along the way, making them a great choice for those who prefer not to drive. WILDLIFE WATCHING IN THE PARK

Denali National Park is celebrated for its abundant wildlife, offering visitors the exciting opportunity to witness animals in their natural environment. The park is home to the famous “Denali Big Five”- grizzly bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, and wolves- as well as foxes, marmots, and an impressive variety of bird species. Spotting these animals, especially from the safety of the park’s main road, is often a highlight of any trip. When observing wildlife, always maintain a safe distance and remember never to feed, disturb, or attempt to interact with any animals. Following these guidelines ensures a safe and respectful experience for both visitors and Denali’s remarkable creatures.

CRAFTING YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

The park stands out for the incredible freedom it offers visitors to craft their own unique adventures. Whether you’re joining a guided tour, exploring solo, or making memories with family, the possibilities are endless. With a philosophy of minimal human impact, most trails remain unmarked and vast stretches of backcountry are open for personal exploration, allowing for an authentic sense of adventure and discovery that defines the Denali experience. To deepen your understanding of Denali’s geology, ecology, and cultural heritage, consider joining one of the park’s ranger-led activities, such as the Denali Discovery Hikes or Sled Dog Demonstrations. Don’t miss a visit to the Denali Visitor Center, Murie Science and Learning Center, or the Eielson Visitor Center, where you’ll find educational exhibits and opportunities to connect with knowledgeable park staff.

WHAT TO PACK AND HOW TO PREPARE

Thoughtful packing and advance preparation are essential for making the most of your Denali adventure. The park’s weather can be highly unpredictable, so it’s wise to bring plenty of layers, waterproof gear, sturdy hiking boots, and warm accessories like hats and gloves, no matter the season. Don’t forget other essentials such as sunscreen, insect repellent, and refillable water bottles to stay comfortable throughout your visit. If you’re joining a guided tour, reach out to your outfitter ahead of time to confirm what specialized gear is provided or recommended for your chosen activity. Lastly, be sure to arrange any required permits or reservations before you arrive to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.

ACCOMODATIONS IN DENALI

Denali features a wide variety of accommodation options to fit every travel style and budget. For those who value comfort and convenience, numerous lodges and hotels are located near the park entrance, many offering shuttle services and breathtaking mountain views. Some standout choices include Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, Denali Bluffs Hotel, Grand Denali Lodge, Denali Crow’s Nest Log Cabins, Denali Cabins, and Holland America Denali Lodge, all of which provide excellent places to unwind after a day of exploration. If you prefer a more immersive experience, several campgrounds are available both inside and outside the park, with Riley Creek Campground being a top recommendation for first-time visitors. To make your trip even easier, we provide direct pick-up from any of these accommodations and more to our office, ensuring a seamless start to your Denali adventure.

SURPRISES AWAIT

Once you’ve settled in and started to explore, you’ll quickly find that Denali offers a few surprises that make it truly unique among travel destinations. Many first-time visitors are astonished by the park’s sheer scale and sense of isolation- most of its six million acres are untouched wilderness, and cell service or internet access is scarce. This remoteness provides a rare chance to disconnect from the outside world and fully immerse yourself in nature. Denali’s weather is famously unpredictable; it’s not unusual to experience sunshine, rain, and even snow all in a single day. During the summer months, the park’s extended daylight hours allow for adventures that can last late into the night. Perhaps most memorable are the knowledgeable local guides and park rangers, whose passion and expertise turn every moment in Denali into a truly remarkable experience.

LEAVE NO TRACE PRINCIPLES

As you explore Denali’s pristine landscapes, it’s essential to follow Leave No Trace principles to protect the park for future generations. These guidelines encourage visitors to minimize their impact by staying on established trails where possible, packing out all trash, and leaving natural and cultural features undisturbed. Practicing Leave No Trace also means respecting wildlife, keeping noise levels low, and being considerate of other adventurers. By committing to these principles, you help preserve Denali’s wild beauty and ensure that it remains a place of wonder for everyone who visits.
